First is that it's a really broad Q - the lift starts down somewhere like 1.5k, so you can't bring up sparkle or air without a load of potentially harsh upper mids coming with it. I think there's a couple of things going on with the high shelf. Black Rooster's very good, but I usually want more than just a high shelf. The IK filters are amazing but saturation is a bit too crackly IMO. Kush N would be right up there, but it rolls off way too much treble, so I tend only to use it on sources where I don't want high end anyway (guitars etc). The Lindell 80 is a close second but the saturation sounds a bit more static. I've not tried them all, but I have the IK 73, Lindell 80, Kush Omega-N, Black Rooter V-Pre73 & SKnote Marconi.įor me, the saturation of the SKnote is the best.

that doesn't mean it can't add harmonic saturation, mimic the EQ filter shapes, and even do some of the general stuff a Neve Preamp does as the gain setting is changed (I believe the real circuit lowers in impedence as you turn up the gain, so you could model that in the most general sense by softening the treble I suppose) - so these things are still useful tools. It's a fair question, and of course the answer is that it can't - not in the sense of changing how the mic is loaded in the case of something like an SM7 where it changes the tone and transient response of the mic.īut. how do you emulate the interaction between the mic and it's preamp? it's not exactly a one way street. Ok this will sound SNOOTY but i FAIL to see how a plug in can ever emulate a mic preamp.
